This year’s donor gifts feature art by local Kwakwaka’wakw artist gwagwadaxla. Find more of his work at movement74.ca !
“In the design is an octopus wearing sea urchin and sisiutl (double-headed sea serpent) headphones. I wanted to draw on CFUV’s theme this year of friendship by creating an image made only by living creatures. There is an imminent power in coming together, tuning into the people around us, and cultivating friendship and community. I believe that with community comes protection, and the sisiutl is a great symbol of protection for my people. It is time to look at each other, open our hearts, and break down the walls that are often created in academic and arts spaces due to the ongoing colonial project.”
